RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Despite erasing an 11-point first half deficit, Prairie View A&M men's basketball (1-5) stumbled late during an 83-74 loss to Georgia State Friday evening at the California Baptist University Events Center.
The contest was a part of the 2K Empire Classic. Prairie View A&M now awaits the loser of tonight's California Baptist/Central Arkansas contest for tomorrow.
With Prairie View A&M down 13-9, senior
Chancellor Ellis nailed a three to pull the Panthers within a basket of Georgia State. However, Georgia State's Corey Allen started and finished a 13-4 run that left the Panthers trailing 26-15 with 8:53 left in the first half.
Ellis buried another three-pointer to spark a 7-0 Panther run, and senior
Gerard Andrus keyed a Prairie View A&M rally, matching Georgia State's 10 points on his own over the final 6:42 of the frame. With Andrus cooking Georgia State, the Panthers outscored Georgia State 18-10 over that span, with sophomore
Tamir Bynum knocking down a jumper in the final moments to tie the game at 38 going to halftime.
The intermission seemed to derail the Panthers' momentum as Georgia State opened the second half on a 15-4 run, but Andrus ensured Prairie View A&M wouldn't fall out of contention so soon, keying an 8-0 run that made the game 53-51 Georgia State with 12:09 left.
Though the Panthers stayed in striking distance, they were unable to overtake Georgia State, and with the Panthers going the final 3:42 of the game without a field goal, they got no closer than four the rest of the way.
Andrus led Prairie View A&M with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Junior
Jonathan Jackson scored 11 points, while Bynum and sophomore
Faite Williams added 10 points each.
Allen led Georgia State with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Panthers shot 37 percent from the floor, compared to a 48 percent mark by Georgia State. Prairie View A&M's bench outscored Georgia State's 35-21.
