SAN ANTONIO - A week-long layoff was no issue for Prairie View A&M men's basketball as three players scored in double figures during a 79-72 win over Texas-San Antonio Saturday evening at UTSA's Convocation Center.
The Panthers move to 3-5 on the season heading into December.
Senior
Gerard Andrus continued his recent tear with a team-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with 10 rebounds. Senior
Darius Williams added 15 points, and junior
Lenell Henry notched his first double-double as a Panther with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
"I think we just came out with a renewed spirit, you know," PVAMU Head Coach
Byron Smith said. "We had been playing pretty good basketball out in California, but we dropped a tough one to Cal, we dropped a tough one to Georgia State but obviously got the win against Central Arkansas, and I think it just kind of rejuvenated us."
The Panthers roared out of the gates to start, using the three-ball to key a dominating 21-4 scoring surge to open the game. Prairie View controlled matters for much of the first half but the Roadrunners (1-6) found some rhythm down the stretch. Following a Williams free throw that put the Panthers up 16 with 9:46 left before the break, the Roadrunners used the long-ball to its advantage during a 19-6 run that cut the Panthers' lead to three with four minutes left in the period.
However, Andrus and senior
Antione Lister ensured the Panthers would stay ahead, as the duo outscored UTSA 8-3 the rest of the half to give the Panthers a 41-32 lead going to the lockers. The Roadrunners threatened again when they opened the second half with an 11-3 run that brought them within one, but senior
Chancellor Ellis buried a three, and Henry followed with a jam to spark a 9-2 Panthers run.
After a Jackson layup shrank the Panthers' lead to 55-49, Prairie View A&M nearly slammed the door on the contest with a final surge that put them ahead by 10. The Roadrunners made a late push but the Panthers were up to the task as Andrus closed the game with clutch foul-line shooting.
"We had a great week of practice. The guys bought into playing unselfish basketball," Smith said. "UTSA is a very good basketball team; they're a quality mid-major but they're struggling right now. We felt like the matchup against them was favorable for us tonight."
UTSA's Jackson led all players with 30 points. Prairie View A&M shot 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the floor. including a 9-of-14 line from three-point land. The Panthers limited UTSA to a 26-of-67 clip from the field (41 percent) and a 7-of-30 mark from beyond the arc. The Panthers out-rebounded the Roadrunners 42-31 and held a 42-16 advantage in points from the bench.
