Hot-Shooting Panthers Cruise Past Jarvis Christian in Season Opener

PRAIRIE VIEW - Four players were in double figures as the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team opened the 2019-20 campaign in style, rolling over Jarvis Christian 100-62 Tuesday evening at the Baby Dome.

Senior guard Antione Lister led the way with 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Fellow senior Darius Williams scored 18 points in just 19 minutes of action, and senior guard Gerard Andrus chipped in 14 points.

Senior Chancellor Ellis had an all-around effort for the Panthers (1-0), scored 13 points while shooting 3-of-6 from beyond the arc along with four rebounds and three assists.

The Panthers were in control from the opening tip, using an 11-1 run to begin the rout. After a pair of free throws from junior Jonathan Jackson put the Panthers ahead by double digits with just under 15 minutes left in the half, Prairie View A&M stepped on the gas as Williams -- who scored 12 points in the first half -- and Lister helped balloon the Panthers' lead to as many as 25.

Williams closed the half with a lay-up, allowing Prairie View A&M to take a 55-32 lead into intermission. Barely four minutes into the second half, the Panthers' lead had grown to 33, and the home team cruised from there, leading by as many as 38 at one point down the stretch.

Prairie View A&m shot 56 percent (33-of-59) from the field and enjoyed a plus-8 advantage from the charity stripe, going 26-of-39 from the line. Eleven different Panthers scored in the game, as a tenacious defensive effort resulted in 35 points off of 24 forced turnovers.

The Panthers' reserves dominated to the tune of a 50-29 margin compared to the Bulldogs' bench, and Prairie View A&M outscored Jarvis Christian 38-20 in the paint.

Kobe Wrice had nine points to lead the Bulldogs.
