Soccer Open's Tournament Play With Alabama State

11/6/2019 9:29:00 AM

PRAIRIE VIEW – The second-seeded Prairie View A&M soccer team is set to begin its run in the 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament versus seventh-seeded Alabama State at the PVAMU Soccer Complex.

First touch is set for 5:30 p.m., and the game will be the final match of the tournament's opening day of competition.

The Lady Panthers enter the tournament on a seven-match winning streak. Over that span, they have conceded just one goal in competition. The Lady Hornets -- the only team to score on the Lady Panthers during the latter's current stretch of unblemished play -- seek their third tournament championship in the past four years.

Prairie View A&M (10-7, 9-1 SWAC) topped Alabama State (5-14, 4-6 SWAC) 2-1 in the teams' regular season match. Junior midfielder Ashley Chala and junior forward Jojo Bernal each scored in the victory.

Senior forward Diana Neff leads the Lady Panthers with eight goals on the season, while Chala is having a solid season with five goals and an assist. Bernal is third on the team with four goals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Quinn Josiah has been in net for six shutouts, having allowed just 10 goals in 13 starts this season. With 59 saves on the season, Josiah has turned away 85.5 percent of shots faced.

Prairie View A&M and Alabama State are no stranger to one another in tournament play, as this will be the sixth tournament meeting between the teams dating back to 2012. Prairie View A&M trails 3-2 in those meetings, including a 1-0 loss to the Lady Hornets in the 2018 SWAC quarterfinals.

Scouting the Competition:

-  Isabella Beortegui leads Alabama State with six goals on the season and is the team leader in points with 12; while Ashley Thomas has added four goals and an assist (nine points) from her defender position.

- Fans can expect a tightly-contested, low-scoring affair as nine of Alabama State's 10 conference matches have been decided by one goal. This trend has held firm when these teams face off, as five of the past seven meetings between PVAMU and ASU -- including tournament matches -- have been decided by one goal.
