Panthers Close Out Non-Conference Play vs. Huston Tillotson

12/29/2019 11:24:00 PM

PRAIRIE VIEW - Prairie View A&M men's basketball returns from an eight-day layoff for one last tilt before Southwestern Athletic Conference play begins, as the Panthers host in-state foe Huston-Tillotson Dec. 30 in the Baby Dome as part of double-header action and Teachers' Appreciation Day. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.

Prairie View A&M (3-9) returns home for the first time since its season opener, a 100-62 shellacking of Jarvis Christian. Monday's game will mark one month to the day since the Panthers last played in the state of Texas.

Looking to rebound from a 75-55 setback at Seton Hall on Dec. 22, the Panthers expect to lean on their seniors in hopes of snapping a four-game skid and heading into the league portion of their slate on a high note. Four seniors are averaging double-figures in scoring, led by forward Gerard Andrus at 13.5 points per game. Forward Devonte Patterson is second on the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game.

Guards Darius Williams (11.8 PPG) and Chancellor Ellis (10.1 PPG) have also provided offensive juice, and Ellis in particular has been lethal from beyond the arc, shooting 43.7 percent from deep. Newcomer Lenell Henry has been a pleasant surprise, averaging a team-best 6.7 rebounds per game while chipping in 6.6 points and nearly a block per game on the defensive end.

Prairie View A&M is ranked among the top 35 nationally in turnovers forced per game and is currently riding a seven-game win streak versus non-division opponents. The Baby Dome has been a house of horrors for opponents lately, as the Panthers – who defeated Huston-Tillotson 81-65 in the teams' last meeting on Jan. 2, 2019 – have won 16 straight at home dating back to the 2017-18 season.

Scouting the Competition:
- Huston-Tillotson (5-8) will be coming off a two-week layoff, but the Rams have won their past four games, averaging 86.3 points per game over that span.

- Like Prairie View, the Rams have four players averaging better than 10 points per game on the season. Leading the way is Aloysius James, who is averaging 18.3 points, 4.0 assists and 3.1 boards per game. James is shooting better than 45 percent from the floor and from beyond the arc.

- In the frontcourt, the Panthers will look to curtail forward James Jenkins, who is posting 13.3 points and a team-best 10.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.
