The Panthers Return Back to the Win Column With Victory Over Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team was able to bounce back for a 79-66 win over Jackson State Saturday at the Williams Assemble Center.

Junior Darius Williams led the team with 28 points going 7-for-8 from around the arch. He added three rebounds, and three steals to his best game of the season. Senior Dennis Jones followed with 17 points, seven assists, five steals and four rebounds. Blackston contributed with 14 points, and nine rebounds.

Junior forward Devonte Patterson gave the Panthers their first points of the game, as they trailed 3-2 behind JSU early in the half. PVAMU took their first lead of the game after a 7-0 run led by Williams put the team up 9-5 early in the period. A layup by Jones pushed the team ahead 11-8. Following, was three pointer by Blackston that extended the team's lead to 14-8 at the 13:26 mark.

A three-pointer from Williams, followed by a made jumper from Jones gave PVAMU a 19-10 lead over JSU. The Panthers continued their run, led by four consecutive made three-pointers from Williams, to extend the lead to 38-18 with just over four minutes left in the first half.

With three pointers from both Blackston and Williams, PVAMU went on 12-5 run to close out the first half with a 50-29 lead. Williams led the team with 23 points going into the half.

PVAMU opened the second half with an early 5-0 run, ending on a made layup by Patterson tp give the team a 55-29 lead. Another Patterson layup, and a layup by Blackston pushed the team ahead 61-42 at the 13:12 mark. A made three pointer from junior guard Gerard Andrus gave PVAMU the 66-45 lead.

The Panthers were 11-22 from the three-point arch, while going 14-24 from the free throw line.  Jackson State out-rebounded the Panthers 38-33.   

The Panthers continue its run, finishing on layup from Andrus to extend PV's lead 73-50 the largest lead over JSU. PVAMU had a tough time containing Jackson State as they went on a run in the pursuing minutes of the game. 

However, after a personal 3-0 run from Blackston in the closing minute of play, the team was still able to earn the 79-66 win.

The Panthers will finish off their three-game road trip at Grambling State on Monday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Grambling, La.
