Lady Panther Softball Team Closes Out SELA Lion Classic II with a Split

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 HAMMOND, La. -- The Prairie View A&M softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the SELA Lion Classic II on Saturday.

The Lady Panthers ended the weekend 2-2 overall, improving to a 5-3 overall record to begin the 2019 season. 

PVAMU split the final day opening with a 6-2 loss to Missouri State and bouncing back in the afternoon game with a win over the Univ. of Texas San Antonio 6-2.

Missouri State, 6 – Prairie View 2

The Bears opened the game with two runs to take a 2-0 lead over the Lady Panthers. Senior Destinee Williams lead the bottom of the first inning off with a double to left field touching the base first for PVAMU. Following, was a single RBI by freshman Kaila Lee that allowed D. Williams to cross the plate, giving the team its first score of the game. PVAMU trailed 2-1 going into the top of the second frame.

As MSU scored two runs in the top of the third, the Lady Panthers were still down 4-1, and were unable to make a run. Both teams were scoreless for an inning and a half.
Missouri scored two more runs in the top of the fifth advancing their score 6-1.  Sophomore Brianna Grays opened the bottom half of the fifth with a single to left field. Grays advanced to second base on a sac fly by teammate Natalie McLennan, before a single RBI by D. Williams sent her home for the team's second and final score of the game.
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, as PVAMU fell 6-2 to Missouri State.

PVAMU, 6 - UTSA, 2

In the afternoon match up the teams were scoreless through the first one and a half innings, before a single to left field by senior Laurisa Hernandez opened up the bottom of the second frame.  Junior Alyssa Garcia reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing to second after Megan Jimenez reached base on a walk.  On a sac bunt by Diavionne Dewalt, Garcia and Jimenez both took their respective bases. A single two run RBI to center field by junior Gabrielle Fonseca scored both Jimenez and Garcia for the 2-0 lead.
 
The third inning was another big frame for the Lady Panthers as senior Shelby Williams reached base on a fielding error to begin the base running.  S. Williams advanced to second, after a sac bunt by teammate D. Williams.  Hernandez singled to right field to earn her first RBI of the game scoring S. Williams to extend the team's lead to 3-0. A single by Garcia to right field advanced Hernandez to second.  On another fielder's error by UTSA, allowed Jimenez to reach first base allowing Hernandez to score from second and Garcia reaching third.  After a pitching change by the Roadrunners Dewalt singled to the shortstop scoring Garcia and moving Jiminez to her respective base to give the Lady Panthers 5-0 advantage.

UTSA got on the board scoring two runs in the top half of the fifth inning, however the Lady Panthers were able to extend their lead to 6-2 in their half of the inning.  Hernandez opened the frame by reaching base on a fielder's error.  Freshman Jayla Richard replaced Hernandez as the base runner.  Richard stole second giving the team a better advantage.  A single to left field from Jimenez scored Richard to allow her to cross home plate for PVAMU's final run of the game.
Pitcher Crystal Castillo took the win with only allowed three hits. Hernandez led with two hits in the game.

The Lady Panthers will continue on the road as they face Texas A&M – Corpus Christi for a mid- week doubleheader, Wednesday, Feb. 20 the games are slated for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. pitches in Corpus Christi, Texas.
