Lady Panthers Softball Wins Doubleheader Over Texas A&M Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – For the first time in the history of the program the Prairie View A&M softball team has won seven games to start the season.  The 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Champions has won their last seven out of 10 games sweeping Texas A&M Corpus Christi for a first time at their place on Wednesday.

The Lady Panthers has already began the 2019 with some breaking record play.  Another day of superb pitching and defense by PVAMU gave them two wins over TAMCC, by the scores of 5-4 and 3-2.

PVAMU, 5 - TAMCC, 4

The Lady Panthers opened the top half of the first inning with a single to right field by Brelyn Senegal.  Destinee Williams followed behind with a single of her own placing two runners on base.  Alyssa Garcia singled to left field to load the bases for the Lady Panthers.  With the bases loaded senior Laurisa Hernandez was walked to force Senegal home for the first score of the game. Following, freshman Megan Jimenez walk to send senior D. Williams home for PVAMU's second home touch. After a pitching change by the Roadrunners senior Day'zjah Pennywell reached base on a fielder's choice, with Garcia reaching home plate for the team's 3-0 lead over Corpus Christi.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi was able to get on the boards in their half of the first inning (3-2), before D. Williams landed on base after a double down the left field line in the top half of the third inning. A single to center field from Hernandez then brought D. Williams in to extend the team lead 4-2.

In the top half of the fourth inning the Lady Panthers struck again to extend their lead 5-2.  Junior Gabrielle Fonseca reached base on a fielder's choice, eventually being able to reach second base. Before a double to left center from Senegal sent Fonseca home for the Lady Panther's final run of the game.

Vanessa Castro was the hurler for the first game striking out three batters and allowing only one walk

PVAMU, 3 - TAMCC, 2

The team trailed by one throughout the first three innings before Garcia reached first on a walk.  After a base runner change (Jayla Richard) A two RBI home run by junior Cameron Lavergne brought in home touches for PVAMU in the fourth inning.  Richard followed by game Prairie View the 2-1 lead over Corpus Christi.

Senior Shelby Williams was walked to first base in the fifth inning, then reached second base on a sac bunt by freshman Bianca Cruz. S. Williams took advantage of a wild pitch advancing her to third.  A single through the left side by D. Williams allowed S. Williams to come home for the final run of the day for the Lady Panthers at 3-2.

Senior Ashley Higgins took the win with only eight hits allowed on 22 batters faced.

Next, the Lady Panthers will compete in the UTA Maverick Tournament hosted by the University of Texas at Arlington starting on Friday, Feb. 22 at 3:30 p.m.
