Lady Panthers Sweeps Season Series Against Devilettes

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team put together a pair of lengthy scoring runs to thwart Miss. Valley Saturday evening, as the Lady Panthers rolled to a 91-55 victory to sweep the season series.

Senior Artavia Ford led the Lady Panthers with 17 points, five blocks and four rebounds, while senior Sierra Shepard followed with 11 points, eight assists, and three rebounds. Newman contributed 10 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Prairie View A&M opened quickly with a made layup by senior guard Shala Dobbins to give the Lady Panthers their first points of the game as they took an early 2-0 lead. PVAMU then went on a 13-0 run, ending on a made three pointer from senior guard Erin Willis that gave the team a 14-2 run with less than five minutes left in the inning.

Sophomore Jhyrah Cobb came up with a big layup to extend the score to 18-4. A made layup from junior forward Ke'Asia Williams sent the team into the second quarter leading 23-6.  PVAMU continued their run, ending on a layup by Willis to give PV a 39-16 lead.  A layup by junior guard Dominique Newman sent PVAMU into the half with a 46-26 lead over MVSU. Ford led the team with 12 points.

Led by Dobbins, PVAMU scored five quick points in the beginning of the third quarter, taking a 50-29 lead. Both teams went scoreless for just over four minutes, before a three pointer by Newman broke the silence. PVAMU outscored MVSU 10-5 in the closing minutes of the period and went into the fourth with a 63-40 lead.

PVAMU opened the quarter on an 11-0 run, starting with back-to-back three pointers from Willis and senior guard Chelsea Tieuel to extend the team's lead 74-40.  Prairie View went on a 11-5 run late run in the quarter before taking the 91-55 win.

Next, the Lady Panthers will face the Lady Golden Lions of Arkansas - Pine Bluff on Monday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m.in the Baby Dome.
