FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Prairie View A&M women's basketball season came to a close on Thursday night, as the team lost to Texas Christian 72-41 in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament.Â
The Panthers were down early in the first quarter before a layup by senior Artavia Ford cut the deficit down to 6-2. Junior Mariah Campbell, followed with a layup to bring the team close at 6-4. After TCU went on a slight run, a jumper from Campbell at the 4:38 mark pushed the score 12-6. PVAMU went on a 7-0 run to end the period, tying the game at 13-13.Â
PV went scoreless in the opening minutes of play in the second quarter until a jumper from junior Ke'Asia Williams made the score 21-15 at the 7:04 mark. A free throw from Ford followed and pushed the score to 21-16.Â
PVAMU went into the third quarter trailing 34-16. Ford led the team with seven points.Â
A layup from sophomore Jhyrah Cobb opened up the scoring for PVAMU in the third quarter, cutting TSU's lead to 39-18. Junior Dominique Newman, hit a jumper that pushed the score 41-20. A quick 5-0 run led by senior Chelsea Tieuel brought PV up 46-25 by the 6:50 mark.Â
Following two free throws from Tieuel, and a layup from senior La'Neique Nealey brought the score to 50-29 with 5:18 remaining in the period. A free throw from Ford closed out the quarter and sent PVAMU into the fourth quarter down 59-30.Â
Another free throw from Ford had PV sitting at 63-31. A late 10-2 run, including two back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Keaynna Tolbert, gave the team a boost to 70-41 before they eventually fell to the Frogs.Â
Ford led the team with 12 points, eight rebounds, seven blocks, and two assists. Tolbert followed behind with six points.Â
