Baseball Splits Weekend Series Against Texas Southern

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – After falling in the first game on Friday to the Texas Southern Tigers, Prairie View A&M baseball team bounced back with a 5-3 win in game two on Saturday , before falling in game three on Sunday 7-5 at Tankersley Field.

PVAMU 5, TSU 3

With two scoreless innings Daniel Lingua opened the third inning with a walk, before freshman Alex Martinez singled to right field advancing Lingua to third.  Junior Dalton Horner brought in both Lingua and Martinez with a homer to left field, giving the Panthers' a 3-0 lead over the Tigers.

Texas Southern scored their first run in the top half of the fourth, as both teams went scoreless in the fifth inning.  The Tigers knotted the game at three-all in the top of the sixth.  The seventh inning also went scoreless, before a double to left field by senior Tyler Gordon in the bottom of the eight put the first runner on base for the Panthers.

On a sac bunt by Martinez, assisted Gordon to the next base.  A single to third base from Horner allowed Gordon to come home and restore the team's lead at 4-3. Junior Xavier Jefferson soon followed with a score, after making it home on a wild pitch to advance the lead 4-3 and give the Panthers the win.

Horner and Martinez both had two hits on the day. Horner also led with four RBI. Pitcher Kyle Smith took the win allowing only 10 hits on 39 batters faced in nine innings.

PVAMU 5, TSU 7

Sunday's game was a little different as the Panthers got a slow start, with a late ninth inning rally that came up short for Prairie View A&M baseball.

The Tigers opened the first inning with two runs, before going scoreless in the second frame.  The Tigers struck again adding three more runs to their score.

PVAMU got on the board in their half of the third frame as a single to left field by Lingua got the Panthers started.  Lingua stole base, advancing to third on a wild pitch putting himself in scoring position.   Gordon hit a single to left field for a home touch by Lingua.

The Tigers added what they thought was an assured two more runs giving them a 7-1 lead in the top of the sixth.

The Panther refused to go away as in the bottom half of the ninth PVAMU began to rally with Horner reaching base on an error and advancing to second on the throw to begin the base running for Prairie View A&M.  On a wild pitch Horner took a base putting him in scoring position.

Sophomore Calvin Rucker took advantage of a Tiger miscue to reach first, before sophomore Brian Williams was walked, loading the Panther bases.  After some offensive changes as well as a pitching change was made for the Tigers, junior Andrew Garcia doubled to right field clearing the bases to cut the deficit down 7-4.

Junior Avery Williams tripled to right field, bringing Garcia in for the Panthers final run of the game, falling 7-5

Gordon and Rucker had two hits on the day. Garcia led with three RBI.

Next, the Panthers will face Houston Baptist on Tuesday, March 26 for a 3 p.m., first pitch in Houston, Texas.
