Lady Panthers Edges by Southern in Game One; Run-Rules for Shut-Out in Game Two

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Prairie View A&M SWAC Champions softball team took the first two games of the opening series from Southern on Friday, edging in game one 4-3 and run-ruling the Jaguars 8-0 in game two with a shut-out at the PVAMU Softball Stadium.
 
 
PVAM, 4 – SU, 3
 The Lady Panther's first run of game came off of a homer in the second inning, from the team's top home run hitter, senior Laurisa Hernandez, who posted her sixth on the season.
 
The game was tied 1-1 after the Jaguars earned a run in their half of the third.  Senior Destinee Williams singled to left center field to bring around junior Gabrielle Fonseca, who landed on base off of a walk for a home touch and restored the team's lead at 2-1.
 
The pesky Jaguars wouldn't go away as they knotted the game for a second time at 2-2 in the top of the fourth and took their first lead of 3-2 in the sixth.  With a runner on third base PV's freshman Bianca Cruz hit a single to the shortstop for a single RBI as sophomore Brianna Grays came home and tied the game 3-3 in the Lady Panthers half of the sixth.
 
PVAMU held the Jaguars scoreless in the top of the seventh.  With the bases loaded for Prairie View A&M a single by the slugger Hernandez sent freshman Diavionne Dewalt home to edge by the Jaguars with a 4-3 victory.
 
Hernandez had two hits and gathered two RBIs. Williams also had two hits. Junior Crystal Castillo took the win with only six hits allowed on 33 batters faced and five strike outs.
 
 
PVAM, 8 – SU, 0 (Five Innings)
Freshman Kaila Lee led the Lady Panthers from the plate, going 3-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.  Sophomore Kimberly Hernandez went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
 
Senior Vanessa Castro picked up the win in the circle, striking out three and allowing just three hits in the Lady Panthers shut-out.
 
The PVAMU's offense put runs on the board in both the second and third innings to take a 6-0 lead.
                                                                 
In the second, Lee singled to center field to open the scoring for the Lady Panthers.  K. Hernandez followed with a clean single through the middle to score, giving the Lady Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
 
In the third, D. Williams started a five-run rally with a single to left field.  L. Hernandez followed with a single to left center of her own.  Lee beat out an infield single to second base, while K. Hernandez delivered the first run of the inning with an RBI single to center field scoring L. Hernandez to take a 2-0 lead.
 
On another infield single to the shortstop by freshman Serena Antone, Lee scored the third run of the game for the Lady Panthers.  After some defensive changes by the Jaguars, senior Kiara Ross was walked, Senegal delivered a double to left center for three RBIs advancing the score 6-0 in favor of the Lady Panthers.
 
Prairie View A&M added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning as D. Williams and Lee began the inning with back-to-back singles.  Following a pair of outs, senior Day'Zjah Pennywell doubled to left field to plate Lee to give PVAMU a 7-0 lead. 
 
A bunt single by senior Shelby Williams, gave the Lady Panthers their final run to shut-out the Jaguars and take the 8-0 win in five innings.
 
PVAMU will complete the three games series against Southern on Sunday for a noon first pitch at the PVAMU Softball Field.
