Panthers Fall to Grambling in Game Three of Series

 
GRAMBLING, La. — The Prairie View A&M baseball team completed their season series against Grambling State falling 8-4 in the final game of the three game series on Sunday.
 
With two scoreless innings, the Panthers struck first to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.  On a single to right center by junior Andrew Garcia to open up the base running for the Panthers.  Sophomore Demarie Smith notched a single bunt and a walk to senior Daniel Lingua loaded the bases, moving Garcia into scoring position.  Junior Tyler Gordon hit a RBI sac fly to center field for the go ahead first score from Garcia and leaving Smith in scoring position for freshman Alex Martinez.  Martinez followed with a fly out to center field, scoring Smith for the second home touch and complete the back-to-back scores.
 
GSU responded posting six runs in the bottom of the third inning, before both teams went scoreless in the fourth.  The Panthers struck again in the top of the fifth for the lone run and a 6-3 score.  Garcia opened the frame with another single to right center and advancing to second behind a balk.  A walk to Smith and Gordon reaching base on a fielder's choice, brought up Martinez that was intentionally walked loading the bases. Sophomore Brian Williams shot a single to the shortstop scoring Smith for the single home touch.
 
The Tigers continued the attack adding two more runs in both the bottom of the sixth and eight extending their lead 8-3.
 
A final ninth inning attempt by the Panthers wasn't enough as they posted a final run before falling 8-4.  Lingua hit a single through the right side to begin the scoring for PVAMU.  Two back-to-back fly outs left Lingua stranded, before another RBI single shot by B. Williams to center field gave the Panthers their final run.
 
Garcia and Smith's 2-for-3 effort paced the Panthers, while B.  Williams contributed with a multi-hit effort and 2 RBIs of his own. Junior Kyle Smith suffered the loss tossing for seven innings allowing for walks and striking out one on 35 batters faced.
 
The Panthers will return home to face Jarvis Christian College in a double header on Tuesday, April 16 at Tankersley Field. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
