GRAMBLING, La. — The Prairie View A&M softball team went 3-0 against Grambling State over the weekend, as they took the final win 14-4 on Sunday.
With the bases loaded in the first inning, senior
Laurisa Hernandez was walked, shifting the bases to the right, bringing in senior
Shelby Williams for the team's first score. Following was a fly out to left field from junior
Gabrielle Fonseca that gave freshman
Diavionne Dewalt the opportunity to come home for a second straight run. Another walk with the bases loaded allowed senior
Destinee Williams to give the Lady Panthers an early 3-0 lead to close out the inning.
The Lady Tigers posted their first score in the bottom of their half of the first for a 3-1 score. Dewalt was walked in the second inning, but was able to round the bases due to a throwing error, and gave the team their lone score of the period, extending their lead 4-0.
In the third inning, a home run from freshman
Serena Antone allowed sophomore
Kimberly Hernandez to touch home plate for the double RBI. With a runner in position on third, S. Williams singled to the pitcher, and senior
Kiara Ross came home to advance the team's run streak. To end the inning, a double to left center by D. Williams ushered in both S. Williams and freshman
Brelyn Senegal for the double RBI and 9-1 lead.
Grambling added another run in the bottom of the third for a 9-2 score. After going scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings for the Lady Panthers. The Lady Tigers added two more runs, before Ross broke the dry spell crossing the plate off of a single to left center from S. Williams. The bases were loaded when D. Williams was able to reach first on a fielder's choice, and junior Natalie McLennan hit home base and ended the top of the inning 11-4.
A double to left field from Ross in the seventh inning, brought in freshman
Bianca Cruz. McLennan flied out to center field allowing Antone to touch home plate. A triple to right center from S. Williams brought Ross in to cap the three score run.
Grambling was unable to answer in the seventh inning, giving PVAMU the 14-4 victory.
Ross and S. Williams had four hits apiece on the day. S. Williams and Antone also gathered three RBIs. Senior
Ashley Higgins took the win delivering three strikeouts and only allowing only four hits.
Next, the Lady Panthers will face the University of Texas at Austin on Wednesday, April 24 at 6 p.m., in Austin, Texas.
