Baseballs Defense Makes Ninth Inning Clutch Plays to Edge by Arkansas Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Defense propelled the Prairie View A&M baseball team to a big win as they continued their winning streak into the second game of their three game -series against Arkansas - Pine Bluff on Saturday with a 4-3 victory.

Through three innings the Panthers held a 1-0 edge over the Golden Lions scoring a single run in the top of the fourth.  Junior Tyler Gordon opened the frame with a hit by pitch to get on base for Alex Martinez.  The freshman delivered a huge hit, doubling down left center bringing Gordon home for the team's first run of the game.

Junior Andrew Garcia reached base by getting hit by pitch.  Gordon followed with a walk placing runners on first and second base, Martinez singled up the middle scoring Garcia for a 2-0 lead over UAPB.

The home team posted three runs in their half of the seventh inning taking a 3-2 lead over the Panthers.  Just as the Golden Eagles thought they were coming away with the win PVAMU took the lead back by adding two runs in the top of the ninth inning. 

Junior Avery Williams led off the top half getting hit by pitch for the Panthers lead base runner.    A sacrifice bunt and a ground out gave PVAMU two outs, but also moved A. Williams to third base representing the tying run, with senior Daniel Lingua stepping into the box.  A single through the left side from Lingua brought in A. Williams for a 3-3 tie. Gordon singled to third base, putting the lead run on third.  Lingua came home on a wild pitch to give the Panthers the lead for good.

Defense played the ultimate part in the bottom of the ninth as the Panthers locked up back-to-back outs.  With a tying run on first after a walk.  A single down the left line advance the Golden Lions lead runner to third.  The final out came by a fly out to left field to end the game.

Kyle Smith collected his fourth win of the season in the outing, striking out five batters. Lingua and Martinez led the Panther offense going 2-for-5.  Martinez had two RBI and Lingua added one.  Four different Panther scored runs on the day.

The Panthers will continue play in Pine Bluff, Ark. to complete game three of the three game series.  The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 7.
