BOX SCORE MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Prairie View A&M softball team was eliminated from the 2019 SWAC Championship in the semi-final elimination round, falling short to Texas Southern 5-3 on Saturday at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex to close out the Lady Panthers season.
Prairie View A&M went scoreless until the sixth inning, as they were down 5-0 when both seniors Destinee Williams and Laurisa Hernandez posted singles to get on base. Senior Kiara Ross followed with a single, sending in Williams for the team's first score of the game.
Junior Cameron Lavergne was walked in the next play, loading the bases. Junior Gabrielle Fonseca hit an RBI single that allowed Hernandez to touch home plate and cut the deficit 5-2. Senior Shelby Williams followed with another single that brought in sophomore Kimberly Hernandez for the final run of the inning. Â
PVAMU continued to get on base throughout the inning, but were unable to close the two-run gap late in the period before falling 5-3.
Hernandez went 3-for-3 at bat with a double and one run scored. Ashley Higgins (6-4) delivered two strikeouts and allowed only six hits on 24 batters faced.
Crystal Castillo was named to the SWAC All Tournament Team. Â
The Lady Panthers posted the best overall win record of 30 wins in the history of the program.  All of their wins were against NCAA D-I programs.
