NEW ORLEANS, La. — The Prairie View A&M baseball team took their first win of the 2019 SWAC Baseball Tournament with a 4-1 win over Alcorn State on Thursday at the Wesley Barrow Stadium.
Both teams went scoreless until the third inning, when a single from senior Daniel Lingua ushered in junior Andrew Garcia for the 1-0 lead.
Alcorn tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning as the game stayed knotted until the top of the eighth.
There were runners on first and third base when a single from freshman Alex Martinez allowed junior Tyler Gordon to advance to second base. Lingua scored, breaking the tie and giving PVAMU the 2-1 lead. In the next play, a double RBI single from junior Dalton Horner brought in both Gordon and Martinez for a 4-1 lead.
The Braves were unable to answer with runs in the final inning, securing the 4-1 victory for the Panthers.
Lingua went 4-for-3 at bat, collecting one run and one RBI. Junior Tyler Laux (3-4) delivered six strikeouts and allowed only four hits for the win.
The Panthers will play Grambling State on Friday, May 17 at 9 a.m. in the Wesley Barrow Stadium.  PVAMU is 2-4 on the season against the Tigers .
