Lady Panthers Fall to Islanders in Extra Time

PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M soccer team fell 1-0 in a marathon match versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday evening at the PVAMU Soccer Complex.

With neither side able to find the net in the first 90 minutes, the teams went to extra time. After a quiet first overtime period for both squads, the Islanders stole the match in the 110th minute. There, an Emma Gibbs corner kick was knocked into the lower left corner by Kayla Gove, just past sophomore goalkeeper Quinn Josiah.

The score was the lone blemish on an otherwise stellar outing for the reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, as Josiah came up with 12 saves on the night, her fourth career match with double-digit stops.

Prairie View A&M (1-5) managed a pair of tries in the initial goings, but neither attempt was a quality look at the net. Josiah and the Lady Panthers defense continued to hold strong, as five Islander shots on goal came up empty handed.

The Islanders continued to apply pressure on net, but Josiah turned away every try. The Lady Panthers managed their first good look at goal in the 59th minute, but senior defender Alexis Mack sent her shot a tad too high. The Lady Panthers threatened again in the 65th minute thanks to sophomore midfielder Ashley Chala, but Islander goalie Kyleigh Hall made the stop.

The Islanders made a late push but Josiah refused to yield, turning away three shots on net in the final six minutes of regulation, setting the match to overtime.

Prairie View A&M was outshot 17-9 in the match, with the Islanders directing 13 shots on goal compared to the Lady Panthers managing three on the net. The Islanders held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore midfielder Kalia Brown led PVAMU with three shots and was one of seven Lady Panthers to play all 110 minutes of the game.
