Five Set Thriller Not Enough as Volleyball Falls Twice on First Day of Katrinka Crawford Invite

9/6/2019 9:57:00 PM

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 BEAUMONT, Texas — The Prairie View A&M volleyball team went 0-2 on the first day of the 2019 Katrinka Crawford Invitational Tournament on Friday.

The Lady Panthers dropped their first match of the day against Lamar University in three sets before also falling in a hotly-contested five-set match against the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

"Tough match against Lamar," PVAMU head volleyball coach said.  "They play a super face paced game.  We also didn't play as well as we could have.  ULM was a great match, we were in position to get our first win and if we cut down on a few mental errors we would have won our first match.  We are building.  We really have a great team and the wins will start coming."

PVAMU 0, Lamar 3 (14-25, 15-25, 13-25)

The Lady Panthers fell behind 13-4 early in the first set, and were unable to contain Lamar down the stretch, ultimately giving the Cardinals the 1-0 match lead.

Prairie View A&M opened the second set on a 3-0 run before both teams began trading kills back and forth, resulting in seven lead changes, the latest coming in at 10-10. Lamar managed four unanswered points to take the lead, and the PVAMU offense went cold the rest of the way as the Lady Panthers were outscored 11-1 over the remainder of the frame.

The Lady Panthers kept pace with Lamar during the initial goings of the third, but a 6-1 scoring run by the Cardinals resulted in a 15-7 deficit that proved too much for the Lady Panthers to overcome the rest of the way.

Junior outside hitter Tamaira Armstrong paced the team with six kills, one block and one dig. Junior middle blocker Victoria Pearson followed with five kills and two digs. Senior right side hitter CeTara Carter also contributed with four kills and one assist.

PVAMU 2, ULM 3

PVAMU trailed throughout the first set, before knotting the score 20-20, then again at 21-21 late in the period. The teams continued trading points until Prairie View reeled off three unanswered points to take the frame.

The Lady Panthers fell behind in the second set, but a quick 5-1 run brought the team within reach at 13-9. The Lady Panthers continued to lurk, closing within four of the Warhawks. However, PVAMU was outscored 6-2 in the final stages of the set.

After battling ULM to a 14-14 tie, Prairie View A&M snatched control with a 6-2 run to go ahead 21-16. The Lady Panthers fended off the Warhawks' comeback attempts late to go ahead 2-1.

Prairie View came out strong in the fourth set, and was able to take a 5-1 lead over Louisiana-Monroe. The Warhawks managed to knot things up at 12 and eventually controlled the rest of the set thanks to a 13-6 run to close the frame.

Neither side gave any ground in the fifth, remaining deadlocked at 13 but in the end, Prairie View A&M dropped two crucial points as the Warhawks escaped with the win.

Pearson led the team with 16 kills, two digs and one block. Carter also posted 16 kills. Armstrong then contributed with 15 digs, 12 kills and three assists.

To close out the tournament, the Lady Panthers will compete in a single match against South Dakota State University on Saturday, Sept. 7. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
