Panthers Look to Halt Slide at Texas Southern

1/10/2020 10:46:00 PM

PRAIRIE VIEW – Prairie View A&M women's basketball team will try to reverse its current downturn with an early Southwestern Athletic Conference test against Texas Southern Saturday evening at the H&PE Arena.

Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

This will be a key contest for the Panthers (3-11, 0-2 SWAC), who will look to keep pace in league standings following a forgettable opening weekend of league play. Most recently, the Panthers' offense was unable to get going during a setback against Southern.

The teams are 2-2 against one another in the past four meetings. However, the Panthers are 1-4 in their past five games against the Lady Tigers (7-6, 2-0 SWAC) during contests played in Houston.

Senior Bernesha Peters continues to hold steady as the Panthers' top offensive option. She leads the team with an 11.0 points per game mark while averaging nearly three assists and two steals per game. The Panthers continue to pine for the emergence of a true secondary option alongside Peters, but the freshman tandem of Diana Rosenthal and Kennedy Paul appear to be potential solutions.

Both players have combined to average more than 16 points and six rebounds per game during their maiden seasons on the Hill.

The last meeting between the teams was a 73-67 setback for the Panthers.

Scouting the Opposition:
- With coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke in her second stint with Texas Southern, the Lady Tigers put together a perfect opening weekend of play to begin the SWAC portion of the slate. Most recently, Texas Southern cruised past Alcorn State 105-70 on Jan. 6.

- Texas Southern leads the conference in scoring offense at 65.9 points per game and is third in scoring defense.

- Ciani Cryor and Niya Mitchell have been a formidable 1-2 punch for the Lady Tigers this season. Cryor leads the SWAC in points (16.2), assists (7.7) and steals (3.7) per game. Mitchell, the reigning SWAC Player of the Week, is averaging 14.8 points and a league-best 11.2 boards per game. Ataiya Bridges is another player to watch, averaging 10.6 points per game as the team's top bench player.
