PRAIRIE VIEW - One of the things that Prairie View A&M Head Coach
Byron Smith likes most about this year's team is that any player could catch the hot hand on any given night.
Tonight was
Antione Lister's night to torch the nets -- and the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.
The senior poured in a career-high 30 points as the Panthers men's basketball team rolled over Mississippi Valley State 102-83 Monday evening during Southwestern Athletic Conference action in the Baby Dome.
The point total is a season-high for the Panthers, and the Panthers' home winning streak has moved to 21 straight, the third-longest active streak in the country.
Lister was one of five Panthers in double figures, grabbing six rebounds and swiping four steals. Senior
Devonte Patterson went for 19 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and four steals, and senior
Gerard Andrus scored 15 points. Junior forward
Jonathan Jackson scored a career-best 13 points off the bench, and junior
Lenell Henry netted 10 points along with seven rebounds.
Prairie View A&M (10-10, 6-1 SWAC) exploded out of the gate with a 9-2 run, but the Delta Devils (1-18, 1-6 SWAC) wouldn't go quietly, tying the game with a 16-9 scoring advantage.
After a three by Mississippi Valley's Zachary Barnes left Prairie View A&M down 26-25 with 6:14 left, Lister and Patterson began to cook the Delta Devils' defense. Lister buried a three to put the Panthers back in front, and Patterson ultimately accounted for half of the Panthers' scoring output during a 22-6 half-closing run that gave them a 47-32 lead heading to break.
With Patterson having done the heavy lifting during the first half -- he scored 15 of his 19 points during the period -- Lister and company would handle the rest, as Lister scored 17 points in a second half where the Panthers were largely unchallenged. Prairie View A&M cruised the rest of the way, leading by as many as 28 at one point.
Prairie View A&M shot a sparkling 56.5 percent (39-of-69) from the field, including a scoring 24-of-33 line during the second half. The Panthers dominated on the inside with 54 points in the paint compared to 36 by the Delta Devils. Prairie View A&M scored 30 points off 23 forced turnovers and outrebounded Mississippi Valley State 33-29.
Caleb Hunter scored 21 to pace the Delta Devils. Michael Green added 19, and Torico Simmons scored 18.
Next Up:
