PRAIRIE VIEW – Prairie View A&M men's basketball heads east for a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference games as it looks to stay atop league standings with the second leg of the league schedule on the horizon.
Prairie View A&M (10-10, 6-1 SWAC) takes on Alabama State (3-17, 2-5 SWAC) on Saturday in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome at 5:30 p.m. From there, the Panthers will face Alabama A&M (5-13, 2-5 SWAC) the following Monday in the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
The Panthers have won four straight games – the last three have come by double-digits -- and are tied for the number one slot in conference ranks with Texas Southern, who currently hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Most recently, Prairie View A&M churned out the best offensive effort of the season with a 102-83 blowout of Mississippi Valley State. That game saw senior
Antione Lister post a career-best 30 points.
The Panthers boast the third-best scoring offense in the SWAC, and are one of two teams with three or more players ranked in the top 15 in terms of individual scoring: senior
Devonte Patterson (14.8 PPG), senior
Gerard Andrus (14.2 PPG) and senior
Darius Williams (12.6 PPG).
As the Panthers also have the second-best scoring defense in the league, the weekend's matchups shape up as favorable – at least on paper – for the defending conference champions, as Alabama State and Alabama A&M both have scoring offenses and defenses ranked in the bottom half of the league.
Coming into the weekend, Prairie View A&M has won six straight games against Alabama State and has defeated Alabama A&M in six of the past seven meetings, including a current four-game win streak.
Scouting Alabama State:
- The Hornets have been up and down over their past five games, posting a 2-3 record in that span. This Saturday's contest against Alabama State will be just the third home game for the Hornets this season.
- Tobi Ewuosho has been the brightest spot for the Hornets this season. The senior is scoring at a team-leading 14.8 average along with 6.1 rebounds per game. Ewuosho has scored in double-figures in nine of his last 11 games.
Scouting Alabama A&M:
- Though the Bulldogs have dropped four straight games – the last three were road contests – the team has been much more formidable within friendly confines. Alabama A&M is 4-1 at Elmore Gymnasium this season, with a pair of non-conference wins.
- Cameron Alford is the man to watch for the Bulldogs, as the Freshman of the Year candidate leads the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game and has flashed explosive offensive potential at times during the season.
