Panthers Unable to Get on Track Versus Southern

PRAIRIE VIEW — The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team took a hard 68-48 loss against Southern University Monday evening during Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action in the Baby Dome.

The Panthers (3-11, 0-2 SWAC) hung tough early on as a jumper from freshman Kennedy Paul and a pair of points from senior Dominique Newman had PVAMU within a basket of the defending conference champions. However, Prairie View A&M proceeded to struggle offensively as back-to-back threes from Southern's Alyric Scott and Brittany Rose sparked a 11-3 Jaguar run to end the first quarter.

The Panthers' offensive woes continued in the second quarter as most of their scoring came from the charity stripe, though Paul and fellow freshman Diana Rosenthal managed success against the Jaguars, with the latter briefly pulling the Panthers within single digits of the Jaguars. Despite this, the Jaguars closed the half up 36-22 thanks to a 13-6 run.

In the third, Paul connected on a jumper and senior Bernesha Peters buried a three-ball to cut the deficit down to 39-27 with 8:36 left in the third quarter. After a pair of quick buckets from Southern, both teams went through an offensive dry spell before freshman Jadah Martin led Prairie View A&M on a 6-2 run to help the Panthers get within 12 again.

However, a 10-4 Jaguars run that carried into the fourth quarter left the Panthers facing a 19-point hole with 7:06 left. The Panthers made the most of their trips to the line, making a final push via a 6-0 run to get within 13 with just under six minutes left. Ultimately, the comeback was not to be as the Panthers weren't able to get closer.

Senior Ke'Asia Williams led the team with a season high 13 points on 4-5 shooting and four rebounds. Peters posted 11 points, two steals and one assist. Rosenthal contributed with six points, one rebound, one steal, one assist and one block.

Rose led the Jaguars with 12 points.
