BOX SCORE PRAIRIE VIEW – A blistering second half by senior
Devonte Patterson helped power the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team to a gutsy 75-69 Southwestern Athletic Conference win over Grambling State Saturday evening at the Baby Dome.
The win pushes Prairie View A&M's (13-11, 9-2 SWAC) home winning streak to 23 games, which is the second-longest active streak of its kind in the nation.
Patterson stuffed the stat-sheet with 20 points – 15 in the second half – along with 17 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Senior
Gerard Andrus added a game-high 21 points with six rebounds and two blocks, and senior
Antione Lister added 18 points and four rebounds.
Down 37-29 at the break, Prairie View A&M opened the second half on the comeback trail with an 11-5 spurt to get within a basket of the Tigers with 16:28 left, but Prince Moss sank a pair from the line to extend the Tigers' lead to four.
Lister knocked down a three to pull the Panthers within one, and sophomore
Faite Williams gave the Panthers their first lead of the game with 13:39 left following a perfect trip to the charity stripe. After the sides traded free throws… Lister knocked down a transition jumper to key a 9-4 run for the Panthers that gave them a 55-50 lead with less than eight minutes to go.
Grambling State (13-12, 7-5 SWAC) pulled within one after two Moss free throws, but Andrus converted inside to push the lead back to three, and a pair of strong baskets from Patterson gave Prairie View A&M its largest lead of the night at 61-56 with 4:59 left.
The Tigers got within two but an acrobatic finish at the hole by F. Williams made it 64-60 with 3:10 left, and Patterson later buried a three for a 69-64 lead with 1:04 left as the Panthers cruised from there.
The Panthers were put on the defensive early as Grambling State started with a 9-2 run to build an early advantage during a frenzied first half. Prairie View A&M managed to knot things up, but the Tigers found their stroke from beyond the arc, using the long ball to go ahead as many as eight until the Panthers found their stride in the second half.
Prairie View A&M shot 57.7 percent from the floor in the second half and out-rebounded Grambling State 38-22. The Panthers outscored the Tigers 17-2 in second-chance points and 30-22 in the paint.
