BEAUMONT, Texas – Sophomore Claudia Andrea Islas Medina earned a marathon singles victory for Prairie View A&M women's tennis during a Sunday road match at Lamar, but the Lady Panthers weren't able to build on the win during a 6-1 loss to the Cardinals.
The Panther men fell 4-0 to Lamar during action.
Medina dropped set one 6-4, but rebounded with authority, winning set two 6-3 to force a third set. There, Medina outlasted her opponent 10-8 for the singles win.
It was the lone bright spot of the day for the Panthers' tennis programs. Lamar's women earned the doubles point as freshman Victoria Fuenmayor Castillo and sophomore Mahogani Green fell 6-4 in their match, and Medina and junior Jimena Duran Castellanos suffered a similar result. Ultimately, Lady Panthers weren't able to get much going beyond Medina's victory, falling in each of the other four singles contests.
On the men's side, the Panthers conceded the early advantage in doubles play, as sophomore Jorge Juarez Caballero and senior Xavier Lawrence dropped a 6-2 contest, and Kevin Ugartche and Tyrese Washington fell 6-0. Freshman Juan Malham Viada and junior Rodrigo Yoshikata stumbled in a 6-3 match.
In singles play, Yoshikata, Washington and Viada suffered straight-set defeats, giving the match to Lamar. At the time of the clinch, Caballero led his No. 2 singles match one set to nil.
