PRAIRIE VIEW — The Panthers' penultimate home game of the regular season was by no means an easy one, but the result was the same as their previous 24 contests in friendly confines.
Prairie View A&M men's basketball outlasted Alabama State on senior night 65-58 in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Saturday evening in the Baby Dome, pushing its home winning streak to 25 straight games.
The Hornets were up to the challenge early on, building a 13-9 lead out of the gates. But the Panthers (17-11, 13-2 SWAC) shook off Alabama State's early push by attacking the inside on their way to an 8-0 run punctuated by a quartet of free throws from
Antione Lister.
From that point, the Panthers continued to stay ahead, but weren't quite able to put away the pesky Hornets. PVAMU wasn't able to build a lead larger than six in the first half, while the Hornets used the three-ball to pull within one on two occasions.
However, the Panthers bent but never wilted, outscoring Alabama State 8-3 to take a 38-35 lead to the lockers.
The Panthers opened the second half with back-to-back jumpers by Lister and senior
Devonte Patterson to earn their largest lead of the game at seven points, but it was short-lived thanks to a quick 5-0 spurt by the Hornets.
The back-and-forth contest continued until the Panthers' defense ramped up its aggressiveness to stifle the Hornets down the stretch. Meanwhile, Patterson led a 12-4 PVAMU run that gave the Panthers some breathing room to the tune of a 63-53 lead with 20 seconds left.
Patterson led the Panthers with 21 points and seven rebounds. Lister added 15 points. Senior
Gerard Andrus scored 10 points.
