Lady Panthers Earn Opening-Day Split at Cowgirl Classic

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 LAKE CHARLES, La. – Prairie View A&M (1-1) softball split during day one of the 2020 Cowgirl Classic at McNeese State University, taking down Arkansas-Pine Bluff 11-8 in comeback fashion but closing the day with a 4-1 setback versus North Texas.

Prairie View A&M initially got on the board with a RBI single from senior Alyssa Garcia that scored sophomore Diavionne Dewalt. After loading the bases in the top of the fifth, the Lady Panthers broke through for good when senior Gabrielle Fonseca and freshman Kyra Lunford sparked a five-run inning with RBI base hits.

Sophomore Serena Antone went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Lunford had an outstanding debut for the Lady Panthers, smacking a pair of doubles and driving in three runs while scoring two runs. Dewalt and Garcia each had two hits and a RBI.

Junior Kara Fucci got the win, scattering six hits and three runs over six innings of relief work and striking out two.

North Texas 4, PVAMU 1
Prairie View A&M's offensive efforts from earlier in the day didn't carry over versus North Texas, as the Lady Panthers fell 4-1.

Prairie View A&M threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs. However, the Lady Panthers were unable to push any runners across.

Sophomore Ryleigh Love had a base hit and a run scored, while junior Kimberly Hernandez accounted for Prairie View A&M's lone RBI. Senior Crystal Castillo allowed three hits and three runs in 3.0 innings of work, striking out two. Senior Taylor Drury performed well in relief, allowing three hits and one run in three frames of work.

The Lady Panthers continue play in the Cowgirl Classic with two more games tomorrow. Prairie View A&M starts with a 1 p.m. contest versus Ball State and follows with a 5 p.m. tilt versus host McNeese.
