PRAIRIE VIEW – Prairie View A&M women's basketball begins the second leg of the conference slate with a Southwestern Athletic Conference home tilt versus arch-rival Texas Southern Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Baby Dome.
The contest could be pivotal for the Panthers (7-14, 4-5 SWAC), who are log-jammed in the middle of the pack as it relates to conference standings.
Prairie View A&M is coming off an up-and-down weekend, during which the Panthers topped Alabama State in a double-overtime thriller but stumbled at Alabama A&M. The Panthers look to avenge an 88-65 setback in the teams' prior meeting on Jan. 11. Freshman
Diana Rosenthal scored 15 points to lead Prairie View A&M offensively, while freshman
Kennedy Paul and grad transfer
Tatyana Perez scored 14 points each.
Panther News and Notes:
- Prairie View A&M sports the third-stingiest defense in the SWAC as far as points per game, having limited opponents to 64.9 points per night. In league play, the Panthers' scoring defense averages dips even lower to 60.2 points allowed per game.
- The Panthers have done a solid job of keeping SWAC opposition off the boards, conceding just 32.9 boards per game, second-lowest in league play among SWAC teams.
- Senior
Bernesha Peters continues to hold steady as the top offensive option for the Panthers, averaging 10.2 points per game. However, fellow senior
Ke'Asia Williams – the league's sixth-ranked rebounder at 5.9 per outing – has shown a knack for raising her game against conference foes, as her 11.2 points per game in SWAC action ranks No. 1 among PVAMU players.
Scouting the Opposition:
- Texas Southern comes into the contest with a 13-7 record, including an 8-1 mark in league play. The Lady Tigers rank No. 1 in scoring offense at better than 71 points per game.
- Albeit shorthanded in this contest, the Lady Tigers may turn to junior guard Ataiya Bridges, who accounts for 11.3 points per game (third-best on the team) and is the team's top long-range threat. Bridges is coming off a strong weekend of play for which she was named SWAC Co-Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Richelle Velez could also factor into Texas Southern's offensive plans.
