Lady Panthers upended by UTSA on final day of Cowgirl Classic

BOX SCORE LAKE CHARLES, La. – In a back-and-forth affair, the Prairie View A&M softball team (1-4) dropped a 9-5 contest to Texas-San Antonio in its final game of the McNeese State-hosted Cowgirl Classic.

Prairie View A&M got to UTSA starter Madison Nelson early as seniors Alyssa Garcia and Daneisha Hinton slapped back-to-back doubles – Hinton's two-bagger scored Garcia – to put the Lady Panthers on the board. A misplay in center allowed Hinton to touch home plate for a 2-0 lead.

After the Roadrunners responded with a three-run spurt in their half of the frame, the Lady Panthers tied the game in the second inning after sophomore Serena Antone – who singled to lead off the action – scored on a RBI single by junior Brianna Grays. Prairie View A&M was poised to surge ahead after getting runners on second and third with one out, but consecutive groundouts halted the threat.

The Roadrunners plated a run in the third and fourth inning, but the Lady Panthers refused to go away, manufacturing a two-out rally in the sixth. Antone and freshman Bryanna Bell led off the inning with base hits and senior Gabrielle Foncesa brought home Antone with a single. Bell later scored on a gaffe by the UTSA shortstop to tie the game.

However, the Roadrunners pulled ahead for good after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Hinton and Antone each had a pair of hits on the day, but the Lady Panthers stranded six runners during the fracas. Senior Crystal Castillo allowed five hits and struck out two in 4.0 innings of work.
