PRAIRIE VIEW – Prairie View A&M Head Men's Basketball Coach
Byron Smith was lauded alongside 11 other head coaches across the nation by The Brantley Method for their efforts in leading their respective teams to conference championships during the 2019-20 season.
As part of a series titled "More Than Just A Recruiter," the marketing agency celebrated the accomplishments of 12 black head coaches who guided their programs to the top of their respective conferences.
Under Smith, the Panthers have reached rare air in terms of on-court success, having won back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference championships and the 2019 SWAC Tournament. This past season, Smith won his second-straight SWAC Coach of the Year award after leading the Panthers to a 19-13 mark (14-4 in conference play) and coaching SWAC Player of the Year
Devonte Patterson and a pair of All-SWAC honorees in Patterson and
Gerard Andrus. Additionally, the Panthers ranked seventh nationally in turnovers forced (17.7) per game and 14th nationally in steals (8.7) per game.
After the conclusion of Smith's fourth full season at the helm, the Panthers are firmly established as the top men's hoops program in the league and have won a combined 41 games over the past two seasons, with a sparkling 32-5 record in league play.
Additionally, Smith's Panthers have authored a 27-game home winning streak, which is the second-longest active streak of its kind in the nation.
