PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team has checked off a lot of boxes lately.
A Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season championship? Check. A perfect season at home? Check.
But there's still more work to do, as the Panthers (18-11, 14-2 SWAC) faces Alcorn State (13-14, 9-7 SWAC) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Miss. The Panthers then close the regular season at Southern (14-15, 11-5 SWAC) at 5:30 p.m. at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge, La.
The Panthers have won eight in a row overall and have won their last two games at Alcorn State. PVAMU has defeated Southern in three of the teams' past four meetings in Baton Rouge.
Panther News and Notes:
- Already assured at least a share of the league title, Prairie View A&M clinches the regular season crown outright with at least one win over its final two games or a loss by Texas Southern.
- Prairie View A&M senior
Gerard Andrus was named College Sports Madness SWAC Men's Basketball Player of the week for the second time this season. Andrus scored 21 points along with seven boards and six assists in the team's most recent win versus Alabama A&M.
- The Panthers have won 26 straight games at home, the second-longest active streak of its kind in the nation.
Scouting Alcorn:
- Thursday's matchup stands to be a styles clash as the No. 2 ranked scoring defense of the Panthers must slow down the SWAC's No. 1 scoring offense in Alcorn State. The Braves do much of their damage from beyond the arc, leading the league with a 37.3 field-goal percentage from deep. However, the Panthers allow the lowest three-point percentage in the league at 30.3.
- The Braves have four players averaging double-digits in scoring, led by marksman Maurice Howard (13.7 PPG, 3.7 APG, 37% 3-PT) and Troymain Crosby (13.3 PPG, 5.5 RPG). Deshaw Andrews (12.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG) is knocking down 48 percent of his three-pointers this season and Corey Tillery (12.7 PPG, 4.3 RPG) is another nice option for Alcorn's offense.
Scouting Southern:
- Southern comes into the final weekend of the regular season as one of the hottest squads in the SWAC, having won five in a row and 11 of their last 13 games. Eight of their last 11 wins have come by double-digits.
- The Jaguars do not have a player averaging double-digits in scoring, but they make their hay in defensive prowess. Southern has the No. 1 ranked scoring defense – overall and conference-wise – in the SWAC, holding conference opponents to 59.9 points a game.
