BOX SCORE PRAIRIE VIEW – Behind a big night from
Jawaun Daniels and a near double-double from
Cam Mack, the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team (2-4, 1-0) took down Texas Southern (2-6, 0-1) 73-67 in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Monday evening at the Baby Dome.
How it Happened:
The long ball was the early difference for the Panthers, who buried three of their first four tries from beyond the arc to gain the upper hand. With Jeremiah Gambrell powering the early start and
D'Rell Roberts overwhelming the Tigers with long-range sharpshooting – he scored 11 points during a 13-3 run -- the Panthers surged ahead to a double-digit lead.
The Panthers continued their barrage of threes, building a lead as large as 16 before taking a 40-28 advantage to the break.
Despite a 10-4 run for TSU that brought the Panthers' lead down to 11, Prairie View A&M's hold on the matter was never truly threatened until the Tigers managed a 15-4 spurt to get within seven of PVAMU with 3:40 remaining. Mack converted a pair from the charity stripe to make it 67-58.
Texas Southern inched back into it, but Dewayne Cox cashed in on a slick pass from Mack as he scored on a baseline lay-in to make it 69-61 Panthers with 1:21 left and virtually sealed the victory for the defending conference champions.
The win marks the 28
th straight home victory for the Panthers.
