PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team (1-5, 0-3 SWAC) looks to snap a five-game skid as it continues Southwestern Athletic Conference play with home dates versus Jackson State (4-5, 3-1 SWAC) and Grambling State (2-4, 1-1 SWAC). Tip-off against JSU is set for 3 p.m. Saturday, and the Panthers clash with Grambling State at 5:30 p.m. Monday, with both games emanating from the Baby Dome.
Last Time Out:
> The Panthers' furious comeback against Texas Southern ran out of time during a 79-76 loss. Freshman Tiffany Tullis scored a career-high 20 points and nabbed eight rebounds along with a pair of steals. Kennedi Heard added 14 points and eight boards. Freshman Allana Thompson was impressive in her most extensive action of the season, chipping in 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Storylines to Watch:
> Tiff. Tullis has emerged as a force to watch for the Panthers, averaging 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game over her last two outings.
> The Panthers boast the No. 2 ranked scoring defense among SWAC teams, yielding 64.2 points per game. Additionally, glass work will be key as PVAMU allows the fewest boards per game to opponents at 33.8 a distinction that bears watching for Saturday's game as JSU ranks second in rebounds per game (42.6) and rebounds allowed (36.3)
> PVAMU swept the season series over Grambling in 2019-20 and has won five of its past seven games versus Jackson State.
Scouting JSU:
> The defending SWAC champions have fired on all cylinders since their loss to Alabama State, winning each of their past two games in dominant fashion over Alcorn State and Southern. With perhaps the league's top inside-out combination in center Ameshya Williams (17.1 PPG, 12.6 RPG, 3.6 BPG) and sharp-shooting guard Dayzsha Rogan (16.9 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 2.4 APG, 1.9 SPG), the Tigers are the preseason pick to finish atop league standings. Jariyah Covington adds a capable third option for Jackson State, averaging better than 11 points a game.
Scouting GSU:
> Candice Parramore and Alexus Holt make the offense go for Grambling, as both average 11-plus points per game. Holt serves as the team's top distributor, averaging 3.0 assists per game. Though they have solid options on the perimeter, GSU has struggled on the glass, ranking near the bottom of the league in rebounding categories.
