Second-half surge powers Panthers over Tigers

1/18/2021 10:51:00 PM

BOX SCORE PRAIRIE VIEW – Behind a second-half surge by Cam Mack and Jeremiah Gambrell, Prairie View A&M men's basketball team (3-4, 2-0 SWAC) topped Grambling State (5-7, 3-2 SWAC) 59-50 during Southwestern Athletic Conference action Monday evening at the Baby Dome.

How it Happened:
A back and forth battle early on, the Panthers used a 15-4 run along with frenzied defense to go ahead 24-16 with 4:30 left in the half. With Jawaun Daniels leading the way down the stretch, Prairie View A&M continued to put the clamps on Grambling State, who only mustered one basket over a six-minute period during the Panthers' charge toward the lead.

Up 29-20 at the break, the Panthers saw their lead cut down to one possession after five quick points from Grambling State's Cameron Christon. After a tip-in from PVAMU's Boe Nguidjol pushed the lead back to four, Grambling State pulled within one.

From there, it became a war of attrition, with the Panthers converting a timely bucket each time the Tigers pulled within one until a three-point play from Christon to tie the game at 36, and Cameron Woodall put the Tigers ahead 38-36 with 12:25 left. Mack continued his second-half takeover for the Panthers with Gambrell joining him, as the duo accounted for 16 points during an 18-4 run that put Prairie View A&M ahead 54-40 with 5:57 left

The Panthers pulled away from that point, leading by no less than nine the rest of the game on their way to a 29th straight home win.

Top Performances:
Mack led the Panthers with 15 points, six assists and four rebounds. Daniels scored 11 points and grabbed nine boards. Gambrell scored seven points, all in the second half. Jerroda Briscoe blocked four shots in 11 minutes of action.

Trevell Cunningham led Grambling State with 12 points. Christon added 11.

Next Up:
Prairie View A&M is back in action Jan. 23 with a road game versus Mississippi Valley State. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. from the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex
