Women's Basketball Closes Out Bank of Hawaii Tournament

HONOLULU, HI – The Prairie View A&M Panthers fell to the Portland Pirates 80-54, on Sunday at the Sheriff Center on the final day of the Bank of Hawaii Tournament.

With the loss, PV falls to 1-4 overall while Portland (4-0) continues its win streak as the game was much closer than the final score reflects.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Panthers started the game closely, before the Pirates took control with a 14-0 run that left PVAMU short going into the second quarter down by 10 (21-11).
 
The Pesky Panthers only allowed Portland to score 12 points, but weren't able to cut the 11 point deficit going into the break by the score of 33-22.
 
Coming out of the intermission Portland took final control of the game to make it a 20 point deficit in the third. The Panthers continued to try to bounce back, but just couldn't get a handle on the game falling 80-54.
 
Leading the way for the Panthers was sophomore Gerlyn Smith who finished with a team-high 13 points and seven rebounds. The Miramar, Fla., native also added an assist in the game. 
 
Juniors Kennedy Paul and Diana Rosenthal both finished the game in double figures.  Paul had 11 points, three rebounds, one assist and a season high four steals, while Rosenthal posted 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.
 
From the field, the Panthers shot just 31.7 percent (20-of-63) for the game compared to 43.6 percent (30-of-69) for Portland.  PVAMU were also 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from 3-point range and 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from the free stripe line.
 
Up Next:
The Panthers will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 23 when to travel to face Wichita State in Wichita, Kansas for a 6 p.m. tip prior to the Thanksgiving break.
