Men's Hoops readies for busy week on the court

PRAIRIE VIEW – After a three-week hiatus from the court, the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team (7-4, 6-0 SWAC) looks to stay perfect in Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a trio of tests.

First, in a make-up from a contest initially scheduled for February 6, PVAMU heads into Houston to face Texas Southern (7-7, 4-2) Sunday at 4 p.m. Then, the Panthers welcome Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff to the Baby Dome, hosting UAPB February 23 at 6 p.m. on ESPNU and facing the Delta Devils February 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Last Time Out:
> The Panthers have not played since February 1, when they overran Alabama State 87-63 on February 1 behind Cam Mack's  24 points, nine assists and three steals. Jawaun Daniels scored 14 points – 13 in the second half – and grabbed seven boards, and D'Rell Roberts put up 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.

Storylines to Watch:
> Prairie View A&M has won 31 straight home games, the third-longest active streak of its kind in the nation.
> Mack dishes out 8.5 assists per night, a mark that leads the nation.
> A Panthers win on Sunday would mark the first time in at least a decade that PVAMU has swept Texas Southern in the regular season.
> The Panthers are a balanced scoring unit, with five players averaging at least 9.3 points per game. Three of them – Mack, Daniels and Roberts – average double-figures in scoring.
> The Panthers defense leads the SWAC in points allowed (63.5). As UAPB and Mississippi Valley's offense rank near the bottom of the conference, Prairie View A&M may be primed for another pair of top-tier defensive efforts.
> Prairie View A&M has won five straight games on ESPN programming dating back to the 2018-19 season.

Scouting the Opponents:
>Since losing to Prairie View A&M in the teams' conference opener, Texas Southern has hit a stride, going 5-1 in its last six games. The Tigers are in the midst of a five-game winning streak. Led by Michael Weathers, who averages a team-best 14.0 points along with 4.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game, the Tigers have a trio of difference makers that the Panthers must slow down. On the inside, John Walker III provides a strong option, averaging 11.9 points and a Tigers-best 5.8 boards per game. Galen Alexander (12.2 PPG, 5.2 RPG) gives TSU another offensive weapon as well.

> Mississippi Valley (1-17, 1-9 SWAC) has a highly productive quartet, led by new face Keiondre Jefferson, who has averaged 15.7 points and 7.3 boards per game in his first three games with the Delta Devils. One to watch is Kam'Ron Cunningham, who scored 34 points in MVSU's first win over the season, a 68-65 victory over Alabama State. Caleb Hunter and Terry Collins have been the most consistent offensive pieces for the Delta Devils, as each averages 12.0 points a night.

> UAPB (3-17, 2-9 SWAC) looks to halt a nine-game slide. However, the Golden Lions cannot be taken lightly as each of their last five losses have been by eight points or fewer. Shaun Doss Jr., leads the team in scoring at 17.0 points per game. Guard Joshuwan Johnson is a solid secondary option, averaging 10.7 points, 3.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game.
