PRAIRIE VIEW – A career-best effort from Kennedy Paul powered the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team (2-8, 1-6 SWAC) to a 70-58 Southwestern Athletic Conference win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-15, 2-10 SWAC) Monday evening at the Baby Dome.
How it Happened:
The Panthers shook off a sluggish start to take control down the stretch of the first quarter as Tierra Tullis led a 7-0 run – punctuated by a Tamiracle Taylor three-pointer as the buzzer sounded – to give the team a 19-12 lead heading into the second. There, the Panthers caught fire from deep as Paul and Kennedi Heard let off a barrage of treys to help push the advantage to as many as 15. Paul continued to light up the scoreboard, putting in 13 points during the frame to keep the Panthers firmly ahead through the half.
The Lady Lions clawed back into it as the Panthers endured a near five-minute scoreless stretch from the floor, during which the lead whittled down to 11, before Paul knocked down a three to snap the cold streak.
However, the Panthers again lost their offensive rhythm, allowing UAPB to close the gap to six with 6:09 left. Following a timeout, Heard buried a corner three-pointer, and a Paul bucket restored the lead to 11.
From that point, the Panthers cruised, snapping their eight-game skid, and earning their first conference win on the season.
Key Stats:
Paul scored a career-high 24 points with six rebounds and five assists. Taylor posted a double-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Heard chipped in 17 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.
Khadijah Brown and Kaila Walker each scored 14 points to lead the Lady Lions.
