Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ed Bailey

Paul's late-game heroics power Panthers past UAPB in overtime

PRAIRIE VIEW – For the second time in as many days, Kennedy Paul set a new career-high in points as she led the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team (3-8, 2-6 SWAC) to a 79-71 Southwestern Athletic Conference win in overtime versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-16, 1-11 SWAC) Tuesday afternoon at the Baby Dome.

How it Happened:
Despite early hot shooting from Diana Rosenthal, the Panthers were forced to play from behind as the Lady Lions shot 60 percent from the floor on their way to a 23-17 advantage. UAPB pushed its advantage to double-digits as the Panthers were sluggish in the second quarter, allowing UAPB an 11-4 run. Tamiracle Taylor converted a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to eight, but Prairie View A&M was unable to convert on late looks to further cut into UAPB's lead.

Rosenthal continued to carry the offensive load for the Panthers, knocking down a pair of treys to help spark the comeback efforts. The Panthers closed the third quarter on an 11-4 run to put themselves in striking distance, and Kennedy Paul and Rosenthal combined for 13 points to open the fourth quarter, pushing the Panthers ahead 57-52 with 4:47 to go. A corner trey from Taylor appeared to ice the game, but a 10-2 run by the Lady Lions, punctuated by a lay-up from Trasity Totten with eight-tenths of a second left, tied the game and forced overtime.

There, Paul dominated the extra frame, scoring 10 points in overtime to lead the path to victory.

Key Stats:
Paul scored 20 of her career-high 26 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, adding six boards, three assists and a block. Rosenthal poured in a season-high 25 points with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Taylor added a season-high 16 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Totten led UAPB with 23 points and six rebounds.
