PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team (3-9, 2-7 SWAC) dropped a tough 61-57 overtime decision to Mississippi Valley State during Southwestern Athletic Conference action Thursday afternoon in the Baby Dome.
How it Happened:
Following a sluggish first quarter for the Panthers, Tamiracle Taylor got going, scoring nine points to key a run of 14 unanswered points that allowed PVAMU to overtake MVSU 26-20 with 2:12 left in the half.
In the third quarter, the Devilettes pulled ahead briefly before a 10-2 run from the Panthers resulted in a 38-32 lead for Prairie View A&M. However, Mississippi Valley closed on a 5-0 run and pushed ahead 41-38 to open the final quarter after a quick four points.
After buckets from Kennedy Paul and Diana Rosenthal put the Panthers up 42-41, a Devilettes four-point play put the Panthers back in chase mode. Mississippi Valley pulled ahead by as many as five, but a Taylor layup pulled PVAMU within one possession. After a Diana Rosenthal free throw made it 49-47 MVSU with 1:11 left, Jasmin Dixon tied it on a put-back with 19 seconds left to force overtime. During extra time, the Devilettes stayed ahead. Rosenthal brought the Panthers within one thanks to a three-pointer with six seconds left, but the Panthers weren't able to complete the comeback.
Key Stats:
Taylor led PVAMU with 20 points. Rosenthal added 13 points.
Zakiya Mahoney scored 20 to lead MVSU, and Da'Sha McGloster added 17 points.
