Panthers grind out victory over Hornets

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For the second time in three days, the Prairie View A&M men's basketball teams (12-4, 11-0 SWAC) overcame a halftime deficit, defeating Alabama State (4-13, 4-13 SWAC) 70-67 Monday night in Southwestern Athletic Conference action at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

How it Happened:
After sluggish stretches of play led to a 36-33 deficit at the half, the Panthers found their footing as a DeWayne Cox jumper sparked a 13-1 run that put them ahead 50-41 with 12:30 left to play. From there, Prairie View A&M fended off numerous comeback attempts from the Hornets as the minutes ticked away.

Despite holding a somewhat comfortable lead for much of the second half, a three-pointer from Alabama State's DJ Heath cut the Panthers' deficit to two with 5:26 left, but D'Rell Roberts answered for the Panthers with a three of his own to make it 65-60 in favor of PVAMU. After a pair of Hornet free throws, Jerroda Briscoe scored from close range to make it 67-62 with 3:16 left. The Panthers held the Hornets to one field goal the rest of the way, with Faite Williams knocking down an insurance free throw in the final seconds.

Key Stats:
Jawaun Daniels scored a team-best 19 points along with five rebounds for the Panthers. Roberts and Lenell Henry added 11 points each. Cox posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Mack chipped in with seven points, eight assists and four steals. Briscoe swatted five shots and added four points.

Heath led all players with 23 points.

Next Up:
The Panthers return home to play Southern Thursday night, with start time set for 7:30 p.m. from the Baby Dome.
