BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M volleyball team (9-2, 8-1) came away with a key Southwestern Athletic Conference road win over Southern Monday evening, winning in straight sets. Scores were 25-16, 25-23, 25-23.
How it Happened:
The Lady Panthers initially took control thanks to a trio of service aces from
Miriam Cardoner, but the Jaguars tied it 5-5. The sides traded points with little separation on either side until the Panthers capitalized on Southern miscues to put together a 5-0 run that resulted in a 20-13 advantage. From there, the Panthers cruised to a 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers fell behind 17-14 in a tightly-contested second set, but the Jaguars continued to misfire, allowing the Panthers back into the driver's seat. Southern managed to tie it at 23-23, but a setting error followed by a
Victoria Pearson kill closed the frame in favor of Prairie View A&M.
After both teams battled to a 14-14 tie in set three, the Lady Panthers pulled ahead with kills from
Melanie Arenas and
Tamaira Armstrong. The Jaguars fought back, but with late kills by
Thaynara Godoi as well as miscues from Southern, Prairie View A&M fended off the comeback attempt.
Key Stats:
Five Lady Panthers posted at least five kills: Armstrong (9), Pearson (8), Arenas (7), Godoi (6) and
Kimira Coffee (5). Cardoner and
Jakarta Hope combined for 31 assists, and Arenas led with 14 digs.
Skyla Childs added 10 digs on the backend.
