Volleyball grinds out win over UAPB on Senior Night

PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M volleyball team (10-2, 9-1) defeated a tough Arkansas-Pine Bluff team in straight sets during Southwestern Athletic Conference action Sunday evening at the Baby Dome. Set scores were 25-19, 25-22, 25-18.

How it Happened:
The Lady Panthers stormed ahead as Miriam Cardoner dealt three service aces to spark a 9-4 run to begin the game. The Lions regrouped with formidable net defense that tied the contest 9-9. After the sides traded points, PVAMU began to assert itself down the stretch with booming kills from Victoria Pearson, Autumn Dowell and Melanie Arenas. Still, the Lady Panthers weren't able to gain much distance from UAPB until timely spikes from Dowell caught the Lady Lions napping, and Arenas put matters away with consecutive kills.

UAPB managed to stay slightly ahead during a hotly-contested second set, but the Panthers took control behind a 6-2 run sparked by an Arenas kill. The advantage was short-lived as UAPB responded with a spurt to tie the set at 19-all. The Panthers finished with a flourish, and Tamaira Armstrong put down a pair of spikes to close the frame.

Set three was another nip-and-tuck battle, with neither side able to sustain offensive momentum until Thaynara Godoi broke through with three kills to push the Lady Panthers ahead 16-12. That surge would be the difference as Prairie View A&M pulled away from the Lady Lions to close out in style.

Key Stats:
Godoi led with 12 kills, and Armstrong added 11 kills, six digs and a pair of aces. Arenas put in 11 digs, nine kills and a pair of blocks. Jakarta Hope dished out 17 assists, and Cardoner put up 15 assists along with seven digs and four aces. Skyla Childs led the team with 20 digs.
