PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M softball team took a Southwestern Athletic Conference series versus Alabama A&M this past weekend. The Panthers dropped game one 9-4 but rebounded to win game two 14-11 and game three 2-1.
How it Happened:
GAME 1 (AAMU won 9-4) - The Lady Panthers shook off an early run as Alyssa Garcia belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to give her team a 2-1 lead. However, the long ball would end up as the difference maker for the Lady Bulldogs as the contest progressed, as the Lady Panthers surrendered a three-run homer in the fourth inning and a two-run shot in the fifth. The Lady Bulldogs added three runs in the sixth, including another home run to pull ahead for good. Kimberly Hernandez sent one out of the park in the sixth to cut into the deficit, but that was all Prairie View could muster.
Garcia was 2-for-4 in the game.
GAME 2 (PVAMU won 14-11) - Down 8-0 entering the fourth inning, the Lady Panthers got on the board thanks to an RBI double from Hernandez. The Lady Panthers overwhelmed Alabama A&M starter Alyssa Lopez in the fifth inning, as Maddison Parker hit a grand slam and Serena Antone launched a towering two-run home run to highlight a 12-run explosion. Alabama A&M drew closer with three runs in the sixth, but Gabrielle Fonseca put the cherry on top with a solo home run in the sixth. From there, Mya Hall converted the save opportunity for the Lady Panthers.
Hernandez was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Bianca Cruz added two hits, two runs and two RBI as five different Lady Panthers drove in two or more runs. Hailey Salinas got the win in relief, working 4.0 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) and two hits.
GAME 3 (PVAMU won 2-1) - Hall carried over her stout pitching from game two, outdueling Alabama A&M's Esperanza Coe. PVAMU scrapped a run across in the third with a Brianna Grays sacrifice fly that scored Cameron Lavergne. Alabama A&M tied it in the fifth, but Hernandez's RBI double in the sixth ended up being the game-winner as Hall slammed the door on the Lady Bulldogs' comeback attempts.
Hall allowed just four hits and struck out three.
