BOX SCORE PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team (13-4, 12-0 SWAC) fended off Southern 68-61 (8-9, 8-5 SWAC) in Southwestern Athletic Conference play Thursday night at the Baby Dome.
How it Happened:
The Panthers stormed out of the gate, using a pair of long balls to build a 13-4 lead over the Jaguars. However, sloppy play allowed the Jaguars to hang around as they pulled within a bucket before
Faite Williams used the spin cycle to score from close. Southern briefly took control with a 16-6 run that left Prairie View A&M trailing 27-22 with 3:21 left before intermission. Undeterred, the Panthers roared back in front with a 10-2 run punctuated by a three-pointer from
Cam Mack, resulting in a 32-29 lead at half.
Jawaun Daniels knocked down a pair of treys to open the second half as the Panthers' lead grew to nine, but Southern reeled off seven unanswered points to close the gap. The Panthers continued to stay ahead as Southern went nearly three minutes without a field goal.
A pair of Jeremiah Gambrell free throws pushed the Panthers lead to 10 with 6:47 left, and Mack added to the lead with a free throw as well.
After a Daniels three-pointer made it 60-49 with 4:34 left, Prairie View A&M managed to snuff out Southern's final charge with a Gambrell steal and lay-up, making it 68-60 with 52.2 seconds left. The lead held strong the rest of the way.
