PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M softball team (10-10, 9-3 SWAC) reinforced its status as the top team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Western Division, taking a pair of wins from Texas Southern by 4-3 and 3-0.
The wins brings PVAMU head softball coach
Vernon Bland to 152 career victories, five away from becoming the program's all-time leader in the category.
How it Happened:
GAME ONE (PVAMU won 4-3): Down 2-0, the Lady Panthers got on the board as
Serena Antone led off with a single. After Antone advanced to second on a passed ball, Natalie McLennan singled and stole second. After
Ryleigh Love drew a walk to load the bases, a
Brianna Grays bases-loaded sacrifice fly brought Antone and McLennan home.
Jeah Williams gave the Lady Panthers the lead in the fourth with a two-out RBI single that scored Aniyah Spangler. Antone appeared to give Prairie View A&M a cushion with a RBI single in the sixth, but Texas Southern wouldn't go away, loading the bases in the top of the seventh. Though the Lady Tigers pushed one run across thanks to an errant pitch from
Jerrica Rojas, the Lady Panthers' starter regrouped to retire the side and preserve the win.
Antone and McLennan had two hits each. Rojas got the win with a complete-game effort where she scattered five hits and allowed two earned runs.
GAME TWO (PVAMU won 3-0): With
Mya Hall largely quieting Texas Southern's bats, the Lady Panthers did their damage in the middle innings. Grays led off the fourth inning with a single and swiped second before scoring on a RBI single by
Kyra Lunford.
After Lunford stole second,
Cameron Lavergne brought her home with a RBI base hit to center field. In the fifth, McLennan led off with a double and stole third, scoring easily on a Grays base hit. From there, Hall and the Lady Panthers kept the Lady Tigers under wraps the rest of the way.
Grays had three hits, and McLennan had a pair of hits.
PVAMU returns to action April 13 versus Houston Baptist.
