BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M baseball team (7-14, 7-6 SWAC) brought the brooms to the Bayou, sweeping Southern thanks to a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference victories Monday at Lee-Hines Field.
How it Happened:
GAME 1 (PVAMU won 4-0): With Victor Mendoza largely silencing the Jaguars' bats, Prairie View A&M broke open a 0-0 tie in the fifth inning as Avery Williams hit a RBI single to score Xavier Jefferson. With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Benjamin Ybarra added insurance with a bases-clearing double, and Derrick Curry came on late to retire the side. Mendoza threw 6.0 shutout innings, allowing three hits and issuing six walks while striking out seven to get his first collegiate victory. Ybarra was 3-for-4.
GAME 2 (PVAMU won 6-4): After spotting the Jaguars a 2-0 lead, the Panthers tied the game thanks to a two-run double from Keanu Maldonado that scored Tyler Gordon and Sebastain Coria. Though the Jaguars answered with a pair of RBI sac flies in the second inning, starter Tyler Laux managed to settle in while the Panthers' offense returned fire. Prairie View A&M tied the game open with a two-run single by Brayden Johnson in the fifth, and Christian Mendez followed with a RBI sac fly of his own to put the Panthers up for good. A RBI groundout by Demarie Smith in the sixth was enough for insurance, and Dalton Acosta slammed the door, retiring five of the six Jaguars he faced to save the game. Laux got the win, striking out six and surrendering two earned runs in 5.1 innings. Maldonado was 3-for-3 at the plate, and Coria had a pair of hits.
