PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M softball team (12-11) split a doubleheader versus Incarnate Word Tuesday afternoon at the PVAMU Softball Field. The Lady Panthers fell 6-0 in game one but rebounded for a 3-2 win in game two.
Head Coach Vernon Bland has now won 154 games as the Lady Panthers' skipper, just three away from setting a new program record.
How it Happened:
GAME 1 (UIW won 6-0): Down 2-0 after the first inning, Prairie View A&M's bats were unable to solve Incarnate Word's Ashley Trapp. Trapp limited the Lady Panthers to one hit on the day, coming via Bianca Cruz. The Cardinals pulled away, adding a run in the third and three more in the fifth.
GAME 2 (PVAMU won 3-2): A pitcher's duel early, Briana Grays put the Lady Panthers on the board with a RBI single in the third inning to score Jayla Richard. UIW managed a pair of RBI sac flies in the fourth and sixth innings to pull ahead 2-1, but Jeah Williams tied the game with a RBI single and Richard drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the winning run. From there, Chaynau Johnson slammed the door on the Cardinals' comeback hopes, picking up the win in relief.
Grays and Richard had two hits each.
Next Up:
The Lady Panthers are back at it Friday, traveling to Baton Rouge, La. for a key SWAC series versus Southern.
