Bland ties all-time wins record as Softball smashes Southern in Sunday Twinbill

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M softball team (14-12, 11-4 SWAC) salvaged a Southwestern Athletic Conference series win over Southern in convincing fashion, dominating the Lady Jaguars 15-2 and 7-4 in games one and two, respectively, of a Sunday doubleheader at Lady Jaguars Field.

This leaves Head Coach Vernon Bland with 156 career wins as Lady Panthers coach, tying him with A.D. James for the most coaching victories in program history.

How it Happened:
GAME 1 (PVAMU won 15-2): Down 1-0 entering the third inning, the Lady Panthers erupted for 10 runs in the frame to take control. Gabrielle Foncesa was the catalyst, starting the surge with a single and stolen base before scoring on an error at second base. From there Jeah Williams drew a bases-loaded walk, and Karina Cisneros and Jazlyn Perry followed with back-to-back RBI singles. After Natalie McLennan earned a free pass with the bags full, Foncesa blasted a pitch out of the yard for a grand slam that made it 9-1 PVAMU. Bianca Cruz closed the inning with a RBI double.

The Lady Panthers put it well out of reach with three runs in the fourth inning – highlighted by a RBi single from McLennan and a two-run single from Foncesa – and added the cherries on top thanks to a Maddison Parker two-run shot in the fifth.

Foncesa was 3-for-3 in the game. Chaynau Johnson got the win, allowing six hits and two runs in a complete game effort.

GAME 2 (PVAMU won 7-4): The long ball was the difference in game two, as the Panthers broke open a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning thanks to a solo home run from Cisneros. Afterward, Cameron Lavergne scored on a wild pitch and Alyssa Garcia belted a two-run double down the left field line. Parker would put another pitch over the fence to cap the scoring for the Panthers. The Lady Panthers cruised to the win despite a late score from the Lady Jaguars.

Five different Lady Panthers posted two hits. Deja Tapia hurled a complete game, allowing five hits and two runs.
