PRAIRIE VIEW – It was a historic day on The Hill as Prairie View A&M Head Softball Coach
Vernon Bland became the program's all-time leader in coaching wins after the Lady Panthers salvaged a split with Grambling State Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Tigers won game one 6-3 but
Serena Antone's heroics allowed PVAMU to prevail 6-5 in the record-setting victory.
How It Happened:
GAME 2 (PVAMU won 6-5): Down 4-0 after two innings, the Lady Panthers set on the comeback trail, chipping away at the deficit starting in the third inning. There, the Lady Panthers executed a double steal as Aniyah Spangler swiped second and
Ryleigh Love – who reached with a leadoff single – stole home. Prairie View A&M capitalized on a sloppy fourth inning by the Lady Tigers, scoring two runs via error before
Brianna Grays tied the game with a RBI single to score Love.
After Grambling regained the lead on a wild pitch in the fifth inning, Antone's timely hitting took over.
Maddison Parker drew a walk to get on and after small-ball moved her into scoring position – she later stole third – Antone delivered a game-tying single. From there, the Lady Panthers took it in walk-off fashion as
Jeah Williams reached via error and stole second base before Antone delivered the winning base hit.
Love, Antone and Grays had two hits each.
Chaynau Johnson got the win with 2.0 shutout innings of work. The victory is the 157
th in the career of Bland, pushing him past A.D. James for most in program history.
GAME 1 (GSU won 6-3): Despite a 2-1 lead after three – courtesy of RBI singles by
Cameron Lavergne and
Alyssa Garcia in the second and third innings, respectively – the Lady Panthers lost their handle on the game as Grambling tacked on five runs over the middle innings to take control. Despite a late RBI single by Grays, the Lady Panthers were unable to put together a rally to overtake the Tigers.
Grays was 2-for-4 in the game.
Mya Hall struck out six in 5.0 innings but allowed four earned runs in the loss.
