Softball sweeps UAPB

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Prairie View A&M softball completed the weekend sweep over Arkansas-Pine Bluff with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex. The Lady Panthers won by scores of 6-2 and 13-6, improving to 7-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

How it Happened:
GAME 1 (PVAMU won 6-2; F/10): Down 2-0 entering the sixth, the Lady Panthers tied the game as Alexandria Lewis led off the inning for a pinch-hit single. Pinch-runner Destinee Smith stole second, and Alyssa Garcia moved her to third with a single before Jeah Williams entered as pinch-runner. Smith scored during a double steal, and Cameron Lavergne tied the game with a RBI single. With extra innings needed to settle the matter, the Lady Panthers used a four-run 10th – highlighted by a two-run single from Lavergne – to assure themselves the series win. Mya Hall got the win with 4.0 scoreless innings of relief work, striking out three. Lavergne was 4-for-5 with a pair of runs.

GAME 2 (PVAMU won 13-6): The Lady Panthers struck first thanks to a RBI single in the second inning from Natalie McLennan that scored Lavergne. UAPB tied it, but PVAMU exploded for six runs in the third during a surge powered by a two-run triple from Kimberly Hernandez and a two-run single from Ryleigh Love. Though the Lady Lions cut into the deficit to three, Garcia belted a two-run double in the fifth as the Lady Panthers responded with six more runs to maintain control. UAPB added two runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Lady Panthers' advantage held strong the rest of the way.

Hall struck out seven in a complete-game victory, scattering nine hits and five earned runs. Hernandez was 3-for-4, while Love and Hernandez each had a pair of hits.
